10 km North of Hikkaduwa is a village Meetiyagoda that famous worldwide for its large moonstone mining. Moonstone is a colorless semiprecious stone of different degrees of transparency with a strong blue sheen. Unlike moonstones, producing in India and Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lankan moonstones has their characteristic blue sheen.
On average in Meetiyagoda extracted from 50 to 100 raw moonstones of various qualities per day, removing them with depth from 10 to 40 meters. A few decades ago, the stones were not deep from the surface.
In addition to visiting the jewelry store, you can take a tour of the main mine moonstone in the neighboring village Domanwela, where you will see the mine field and lapidary workshops.
