In colonial time, the Dutch built in Sri Lanka, a network of water canals to transport the spices, coffee and other products from the depths of the island through the jungle. The main network channels are in the district of Negombo and the largest of them with a length of 100 km is called the Dutch canal.

The canals were built under Dutch technology and are therefore Negombo in places like Amsterdam. Canals are still used by locals for trade and tourism.
