For developing Colombo Zoo in Dehiwala and also save animals by providing them more suitable natural conditions, because Colombo territory expand so fast, it was determined the unique natural beautiful place for a new zoo near Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the river Maha Oya about 100 km from Colombo.
17 April 2015 in Pinnawala open the first open-air zoo, where animals are in an open area in their natural habitat: leopards, deers, monkeys, crocodiles, many species of birds, turtles and other animals. The zoo divided into two areas: Sri Lanka and The World.
