Jayamali Batik Studio, one of the most famous batik studios in Kandy; was founded in 1979 by Upali Jayakody. He discovered his talent to create unique batik wall hangings and started the business with very few means at his home as a family business. His main targeted customers were` foreigners – those who came to visit this beautiful island. His unique style of designing modern, artistic and unusual designs to a very high quality fascinated the foreign guests who visited his studio. In a very short time Jayamali Batik Studio in Kandy had caught the attention of both local and foreign visitors alike.
His high quality, artistic, hand-produced designs and were now being bought by people from all around the globe. As a result, since 1985 Jayamali Batik Studio has been recommended as producing “the best and the most original batiks in Kandy” by the world renowned guide book the Lonely Planet – Sri Lanka. With that recommendation he won the hearts of the foreigners who visited his work studio. He then began to build up his business and employed 10 people to work for him and continued his business very successfully.
